Apple Unveils Latest iPhone Lineup, Including New Foldable Model Called iPhone Duo

Apple has unveiled its latest iPhone lineup, highlighted by the introduction of the iPhone Duo, the company's first foldable iPhone. The new device marks one of the biggest design changes in the history of the iPhone, combining a compact smartphone form factor with a much larger foldable display.

The announcement was made on September 9, 2026, at Apple's event in Cupertino, California. Alongside the iPhone Duo, Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, while also putting greater emphasis on artificial intelligence, camera technology, performance and battery life.

The iPhone Duo is particularly significant because Apple is entering a foldable-phone market that has already been developed by several competitors. Rather than simply producing a conventional iPhone with a folding screen, Apple has redesigned both the hardware and software around the new form factor.

iPhone Duo: Apple's First Foldable iPhone

The iPhone Duo is designed to work as both a traditional smartphone and a larger-screen device. When closed, it features a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display. When opened, the phone reveals a 7.6-inch inner display, giving users a much larger surface for watching videos, browsing websites, playing games and working with multiple applications.

Apple says the inner display is its largest iPhone display to date. The company has also designed both screens with the same aspect ratio so that content can transition smoothly when the phone is opened or closed.

The inner screen uses a special nano-texture finish intended to reduce glare and reflections. Apple says the finish also helps minimize the visibility of the crease associated with the folding display.

Both displays support ProMotion, Always-On functionality and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Apple also says that iPhone Duo will gain Apple Pencil support over USB-C later this year, giving users another option for note-taking, sketching and marking documents.

A Major Change in iPhone Design

For years, Apple's iPhone design has evolved through refinements to cameras, processors, displays and materials. The iPhone Duo represents something different: a new physical category for the company's smartphone.

Apple has used grade 5 titanium for the device's enclosure and developed a precision hinge containing more than 100 components. The hinge is designed to control the opening and closing movement while providing structural support for the center of the display.

Durability is one of the most important questions surrounding any foldable smartphone. Apple says the iPhone Duo has an IP68 rating for splash, water and dust resistance. The device also uses Ceramic Shield materials for additional protection.

The folding display itself has several protective layers, including high-strength glass, a scratch-resistant coating and a custom polymer cover layer. Apple says the materials and construction are designed to withstand the stresses associated with everyday folding and unfolding.

The phone will be offered in two colors: star white and night sky.

A20 Pro Chip Powers the Foldable

Inside the iPhone Duo is Apple's new A20 Pro chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 18 Pro models.

Apple says the A20 Pro delivers improvements in CPU, graphics and artificial-intelligence performance. The chip uses a new 2-nanometer manufacturing process and includes a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine.

According to Apple, the CPU is up to 20 percent faster than the previous-generation A19 Pro, while the GPU is up to 40 percent faster and more power efficient. The Neural Engine is designed to provide significantly greater processing capability for on-device AI workloads.

The foldable design also required Apple to address heat management. The iPhone Duo includes a custom vapor chamber and an advanced thermal-management system. Apple says this enables up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro.

This could be particularly important for users who intend to use the larger display for gaming, video editing, multitasking or AI-powered applications.

Camera System Gets a Foldable Twist

Photography remains one of the most important parts of Apple's iPhone strategy, and the iPhone Duo includes a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera.

The main camera can capture images at up to 48 megapixels and includes an integrated optical-quality 2x telephoto option. Apple also says the camera uses a large sensor, fast aperture and sensor-shift optical image stabilization to improve image quality, particularly in challenging lighting conditions.

The device also has a 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra Wide camera, which supports wider photography and macro images.

However, the foldable design creates camera experiences that are not possible on a conventional iPhone.

One example is Duo Preview, which allows people being photographed to see the live camera preview on the outer display. This can make it easier for subjects to position themselves before a photograph is taken.

Users can also use the higher-resolution rear cameras for selfies while viewing themselves on the outer display.

Another feature, called Smart Take, uses on-device AI to analyze a scene and automatically capture a photo when subjects are ready. Apple says this is designed to reduce situations where someone is left out of a group photograph because they are operating the camera.

The phone can also record 4K video at 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision using the Fusion Main camera. Apple has also introduced improvements to Cinematic effects and Audio Mix.

iOS 27 Designed Around the Foldable Display

Hardware is only one part of Apple's foldable strategy. The company has also redesigned aspects of iOS 27 to take advantage of the larger screen.

When the iPhone Duo is opened, users can access new multitasking features. One of the biggest changes is Split View, which allows two applications to appear side by side.

For example, a user could browse a website while taking notes, view a document while communicating with someone or watch content while using another application.

Users can also open two windows of the same application, such as Safari, and quickly switch between applications.

Apple has redesigned several interface elements to make better use of the available screen space. The Dock, navigation controls and some system elements move to the side, allowing more vertical space for content.

The Dynamic Island has also been redesigned for the foldable display, while iOS can automatically adapt content depending on whether the device is open, closed or rotated.

Third-party developers are also being encouraged to optimize applications for the new design. Apple says applications including Netflix, Zoom and Slack are already being adapted for the foldable form factor.

Apple Intelligence and the New Siri

Artificial intelligence is another major part of Apple's latest iPhone strategy.

The iPhone Duo includes Apple Intelligence and support for Apple's redesigned Siri AI, which is rolling out in beta with iOS 27.

Apple says the new Siri is more conversational and can use personal context to help users find information across areas such as messages, emails and photographs.

The system can also use onscreen awareness, allowing Siri to understand what is displayed on the phone and perform actions related to that information.

Apple is emphasizing privacy as a central part of its AI strategy. Many AI operations can take place directly on the device, while more demanding tasks can use Apple's Private Cloud Compute infrastructure.

Other Apple Intelligence features include improvements to image editing, Image Playground and Safari. Apple has also introduced tools designed to help users monitor changes to webpages, such as product availability or price updates.

Battery Life and Charging

Battery life is another challenge for foldable phones because manufacturers have to fit batteries into multiple sections of the device.

Apple has addressed this with a dual-battery architecture, placing a high-energy battery on each side of the phone.

The company says the iPhone Duo can provide up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and up to 44 hours using the outer display. Apple also estimates up to 24 hours of usage per charge when both displays are used equally.

Fast charging is supported, with Apple saying the phone can reach up to 50 percent charge in approximately 20 minutes under the specified conditions.

Wireless charging is also supported through MagSafe and Qi2.

Connectivity and eSIM

The iPhone Duo uses an eSIM-only design worldwide, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card.

Apple says the move creates additional internal space and provides flexibility for users who need to switch carriers or maintain multiple mobile plans.

The phone includes Apple's N1 wireless networking chip, supporting Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. It also uses Apple's next-generation C2 cellular modem system, which Apple says improves cellular reliability and supports mmWave in the United States.

Satellite features are also available when users are outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage in supported regions.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max

The foldable iPhone may be the biggest headline from Apple's latest event, but the company also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The Pro models focus heavily on photography, performance and battery improvements. Apple says they feature a new 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with a variable aperture, giving photographers greater control over how images are captured.

The new Pro camera system also includes additional controls designed for users who want more control over their photography.

Both Pro models are powered by the A20 Pro chip, bringing the latest generation of Apple's processing technology to the traditional iPhone design.

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max therefore represent an evolution of Apple's established iPhone design, while the iPhone Duo represents the company's new approach to foldable smartphones.

Pricing and Availability

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States for the 256GB configuration. Higher storage configurations can push the price substantially higher. Reuters reported that the top configuration reaches $3,199.

Apple says pre-orders for the iPhone Duo will begin on October 16, 2026, with availability beginning on October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, including India. Additional markets will receive the device beginning October 30.

The high starting price places the iPhone Duo firmly in Apple's premium category.

The price is also important because foldable smartphones remain a relatively small part of the overall smartphone market. Reuters noted that analysts have questioned the size of the potential customer base for a device costing $1,999 or more.

What the Foldable iPhone Means for Apple

The iPhone Duo represents more than another addition to Apple's product catalog. It is Apple's entry into a smartphone category that competitors have been developing for years.

Samsung, Google and other manufacturers have already introduced multiple generations of foldable phones. Apple is arriving later but is attempting to differentiate the product through its combination of hardware, software, cameras, AI capabilities and integration with its wider ecosystem.

The company's approach is familiar: instead of simply competing on specifications, Apple is building a complete experience around its hardware.

The iPhone Duo's success will depend on several factors, including durability, battery life, software optimization, camera performance and whether consumers believe the larger display justifies the significantly higher price.

For existing iPhone users, the device provides a new way to interact with iOS without leaving Apple's ecosystem. For users interested in foldable phones, it introduces Apple's interpretation of a category that has so far remained relatively specialized.

Apple's New Direction

The 2026 iPhone launch demonstrates that Apple is continuing to expand the definition of what an iPhone can be.

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max refine the traditional smartphone experience with improved cameras, performance and battery capabilities. The iPhone Duo, meanwhile, introduces a fundamentally different design based around a folding display.

The combination of the A20 Pro processor, large inner screen, redesigned iOS 27 experience, advanced cameras and Apple Intelligence makes the iPhone Duo one of the most significant changes to Apple's smartphone lineup in years.

At the same time, its $1,999 starting price means it will occupy a very different market position from Apple's conventional iPhones. Whether consumers embrace that premium price for the benefits of a foldable design will become clearer after the phone reaches stores.

For Apple, however, the message is clear: the company is no longer simply improving the familiar iPhone design. With iPhone Duo, it is experimenting with a new form factor while attempting to preserve the software experience and ecosystem that have defined the iPhone for nearly two decades.

As pre-orders approach in October, attention will turn from Apple's announcement to the real-world experience of using the device. Customers will be able to judge the hinge, display, cameras, battery life, multitasking features and overall practicality for themselves.

The iPhone Duo therefore begins a new chapter for Apple's smartphone business. It combines the familiar iPhone experience with a foldable design and a much larger display, while bringing Apple's latest processor and AI technology into the same package.

Whether foldable smartphones become a mainstream part of the iPhone family or remain a premium niche will depend on consumer response. But Apple's arrival in the category ensures that foldable technology will receive a much larger spotlight in the smartphone market.
